Milja Ilona Salonen arbetar med trä och lera.

Hon använder det material som passar idén

bäst. Långsamheten i arbetsprocessen, då hon

arbetar med skulptur, upplevde hon först som

ett problem men i arbetet med trä fann hon ett

lugn, och då arbetar hon gärna utomhus. Hon

beskriver hur trät leder henne mer än leran.

Lera kan återanvändas och är snabbare att

jobba med men med trä blir det mer ett arbete

med materialitet, och det har en egen vilja och

beter sig som det vill, på många sätt. Hon

föredrar att arbeta med trä som inte är torrt

och försöker arbeta med dess egna vilja och

beskriver hur det ibland kan bli kompromisser.

På Surprise Laboratory International gör hon

som en stig. Hon påverkar trät så lite som

möjligt och vill inte överarbeta materialet.

Kring temat Landmärke funderar hon hur andra

människor kan bli våra landmärken. De kanske

leder in dig på en ny stig, de kanske inte vet

hur de påverkar dig trots att de gör det. I

verket använder hon sina egna fotavtryck och

sin kropp. One day I saw you passing by, är

arbetstiteln. Det fritt för tolkning. Hon framhåller

att det är intressant om verket läses

olika. Salonen tycker om atmosfären i workshopen

och hur alla uppmuntrar varandra.

Hon menar att det är hårt arbete varje dag

men avslappnande att kunna fokusera på en

enda sak under den här tiden.

Milja Ilona Salonen works with wood and clay.

She uses whichever material is best suited to the

job in hand. As a sculptor, she saw the slowness

of the work process as a problem at first, but

then found working in wood calming, especially

when working outdoors. She describes how wood

guides her in her work more than clay. Clay can

be reused and the work is faster, whereas using

wood you spend more time working on the

material. Wood has a mind of its own and does

what it wants in many respects. She prefers

working in wood that is dry and she seeks to

respond to the material’s own will. Sometimes

compromise is required.

At the Surprise Laboratory she created a kind of

path, impacting on the wood as little as possible

and trying not to overwork the material. In

approaching the theme Landmark, she considered

how other people might be our landmarks.

They may lead you down new paths, they may

not be aware of how they are influencing you

although that is what they do. She used both

her own footprints and her body in her process.

The working title is “One day I saw you passing

by”. It is open to free interpretation. In her view,

it is interesting when people interpret things

differently.

Salonen liked the atmosphere in the workshop

and how all the participants encouraged one

another. People worked hard every day but it

was relaxing to be able to focus on just one

specific thing the whole time.
